The History of Celtic Brooches
There are hundreds of different types of brooches. They are usually divided into families based on historical periods, geography and/or cultures. Brooches are also divided into classes which are based on their general shapes. Brooches replaced the straight pins that were used to attach clothing in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. In turn, fibulae were replaced as clothing fasteners by buttons in the Middle Ages. Their descendant, the modern safety pin, remains in use today.
