At the very beginning of the Viking Age around 793 AD, the edge of axes was between 7 and 15cm long before evolving to much larger edge sizes reaching up to 45cm. Initially, the Vikings used the ax for agricultural purposes but they quickly found a second use for them by making the cutting edge larger and the handle longer. Contrary to what one might think, Viking battle axes were balanced, light and very versatile. Their mode of use were not only used for powerful, fast and deadly attacks, but also for various low and sneaky movements.
