In Norse mythology, Midgard is the name of the Earth inhabited and known to humans at the beginning of mythology. Middle-earth, the home of mankind, was made from the body of the first created being, the giant of Aurgelmir (Ymir). According to legend, the gods slew Aurgelmir, rolled his body into the central void of the universe, and began to shape Midgard. Aurgelmir's flesh became the earth, his blood the oceans, his bones the mountains, his teeth the cliffs, his hair the trees, and his brain (blown on the earth) became the clouds. Aurgelmir's skull was supported by four dwarfs, Nordri, Sudri, Autrich and Vestri (the four cardinal points), and became the dome of the sky. The sun, moon, and stars were made up of scattered sparks that were caught in the skull.
